Phillip,
It's tough to answer that question because what is bad for one person is perfectly acceptable to the next.
It's also hard to look at statistics without having something to compare them to. For instance, if the crime stats you are referring to can be compared to other parts of the county, you will likely see more crime in 31206. But, it may be about the same compared to other parts of the city.
The 06 zip code is probably also the most populous zip code through central Macon. So, you have to look at a rate...a percentage of the population. Just looking at counts could be confusing.
In the past when I've seen crime stats for the whole area, it was near the state averages.
The best thing to do is talk to people on the ground. People who live there. You won't find many of them answering question on Trulia, unfortunately. Mostly agents answer questions here, and we're limited in what we can say about neighborhoods because of rules against steering someone to specific areas. You should also get several opinions, since you'll find a good variance in responses. Some will like it. Some won't. It's best to listen to both sides and pick for yourself. You may also find some specific areas of 06 are better than others.
Best of luck!... more
Since real estate agents are not in the business of compiling crime data the absolute best source for that information would be to contact the local authorities i.e. the Lowell Police Department. There is a precinct on Bridge St. that would have the information you are looking for. Good Luck!

From a person who used to live in North Jackson and around the NE Jackson location, it seems sadly, the thieves and criminals move too. What was once a thriving promising area, has turned badly. If you can afford to reside in the more expensive enclaves of North and NE Jackson, you MAY be okay, but I find way south of Jackson, like Byram, Terry, the back end of McCluer Road are very nice. North Jackson along with Ridgeland and Madison have become too congested for me. You can hardly go anywhere without having to deal with a traffic jam. So goes the crime as well. It's only a matter of time.... more
Crime usally does'nt determine home prices, a good place to check out crime rates for different areas in and around Houston (and Tomball) if this is a concern to you can be checked at; www.neighborhoodscout.com/tx/houston/crime
Home sales are actually up this month, check out the HAR report. Still, the inventory of homes, foreclosures and new construction all play a part in the comparative market analysis for a particular area, and the local economy plays a big part too. If you plan on moving in the next five years you may want to avoid buying in an area where values have been deteriating and buy where value has remained more consistant. Check out the subdivision on a weekend when most people are home. Do you see familys out and about with children playing etc; ASK the neighbors who actually live there!... more
Hi Mary,
In order to help you, while it’s not appropriate to start making excuses, I am because of the length of my reply. You’re being provided with loads of information from the other respondents.
As a suggestion for you...please go to my website http://www.billhaydenrealty.com and on the Home page on the upper tool bar click on the center button labeled OKC Metro MLS a new page will come up. Enter the Zip Code 73160 (this is a Moore Zip) click the search button. This will bring up all of the homes currently for sale in this Zip Code beginning with the cheapest. Just scroll on the page numbers for the price of homes you are looking for. You can also use this for other Zip Codes as well, MLS numbers, and addresses. I've found Zip Codes give the best results though when you want to see available homes in this Zip.
To find additional Zip Codes….I’m partial to Google Search. Just type in “Oklahoma City Metro Zip Code Map” this will bring up several sites with Zip Codes listed. About.com is a good one and simple.
Once you identify the homes you and your husband are interested in and as Bridgett mentioned go to http://www.news9.com on the page that comes up click on crime, a new page will come up. On the right hand side scroll down about midway to the “Crime Tracker” button. Enter the address of the home you’re interested in and different colored balloons will appear base upon the type of crimes in the area...no balloons, no crime! :) Once you zero in on a specific home go tour the neighborhood on different days and times of the week.
Mary, should you have any questions, concerns, or need additional help, please do not hesitate to contact me 405 - 562 - 0886 or e-mail: bill@billhaydenrealty.com... more
As a buyer's agent, here's what I tell all my clients:
You can read stats, ask opinions, and watch the news. But the best thing you can do is take a walk around the neighborhood during the day, at night, and then spend an hour hanging on the corner (don't sell anything....yet), during those two different times. When you see neighbors walking, ask them what they think of their 'hood.
You won't get a better safety report than that.... more
The Warner Robins Police department offers a couple resources to help the public view crime statistics in the area. Reports can be found at http://p2c.warnerrobinsga.gov/Summary.aspx and http://www.crimereports.com
I hope this helps! Feel free to visit my site for additional info you may want to view.... more
You are welcome. I understand your concerns since in the past my husband used to travel a lot and I know exactly the feeling of being alone. Please come and visit Bethel, Sunday mornings a lot of people go out to walk downtown, then brunch at Jacqueline's, lunch or dinner at La Zingara. You would love it too!... more
ALL good advice, also check out http://chicago.everyblock.com/streets/mcvicker-ave/2404-2499n/ , very informational. Find out what neighbors in that neighborhood are saying. My office is at Belmont and Central if I could be of any help!... more
I lived at 1207 Obispo in a condo for 2 1/2 year at the corner of obispo and anaheim. Stores and transportation was very convient, but there is a lot of crime and transients in the area. I lived right across the street from the Ralph's market and there was always homeless people trying to sleep in our stairwells outside and loitering outside of our underground parking gate. As much as I loved my condo, I declined on buying the unit due to the crime in the area and the HOA fees. There are better condo in a better area down anaheim across the street from the golf course around the same price and around the traffic cirle. Hope this helps. Signed VA employee.... more
There are some good advice comments below, but I'll add that not always is crime reported. May I suggest that you find a great neighborhood then drive around at different times of the day, and at night. Then talk to a few neighbors. Also, check with the local SAFFE unit to see what has been reported but not officially filed.
Let me know if I can be of further assistance.
